SUSAN JOAN (BAIN) PIPER

Another angel has ascended. Susan Joan, born in Ottawa on September 23, 1943, to Gordon and Natalie (Dolly) Bain, succumbed to a lengthy battle with cancer.

Sue is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband, Bob, just shy of their 62nd anniversary; children Rob (Tannis) and Colleen (David Ingram); her brother D'Arcy Bain; her grandchildren Chad, Megan, Madison Piper (Josh Bedard), Brett and Brynne Ingram, and great-granddaughter Rosie.

Following golf pro Gordon's travels, Sue lived in Geraldton, then Fort William. She married Bob in 1964, and together they graduated in 1965 with the first Arts degrees awarded by Lakehead University. They moved to Winnipeg later that same year.

Sue, who has always been a "person for others" reminded us all to "be kind, and show compassion", words which displayed her modus operandi to the world around her. Whether it was in the classroom, in the Fort Garry School Division and at Balmoral Hall School, Sue spread that kindness and compassion to hundreds of children in her care.

At St. Paul's Anglican Church, where she has been active since 1965, Sue has participated in all aspects of church life - Christian Education, Chancel Guild, Outreach Projects (particularly the Thelma Wynne Baby Shower project), Parish Council and People's Warden. Sue loved the church kitchen, from serving on the new kitchen committee to serving coffee, organizing dinners, setting up funeral gatherings and serving at the Seniors' Dinners. St. Paul's has offered a lifetime of opportunities to worship and share with many.

Sue's commitment to others extended through volunteer work with Meals on Wheels, refugee support, and serving on Boards like Fort Garry Family Life, Westgate Mennonite Collegiate and the Balmoral Hall Archives; hosting the Wildwood Park Janes Walk events, hosting Coffee and Conversation times in her condo community, making hundreds of loaves of sandwiches to distribute to wildfire and flood refugees, and helping out wherever she saw a need.

Sue and Bob cherished over 30 summers at Spruce Lake, near Kenora, welcoming family and friends. She also valued lasting friendships through her book club and a 50+ year dinner group.

The family thanks their many friends, especially Tim, Irene, Karen and Peg and express their gratitude for the dedication of Dr. Popowich, the CancerCare team, and the compassionate staff at the Vic, and on Sb of the Women's Hospital.

If you wish to honour Sue's memory, we know that she would encourage you to support CancerCare Manitoba, the St. Paul's Anglican Church Memorial Fund, or a charity of one's choice.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, April 17, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Fort Garry (North Drive at Point Road).

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • We loved family gatherings when Sue was present. Sue had a wonderful, kind, calm presence about her. A fantastic baker, I always looked forward to her Christmas dainties. The variety was amazing. Her friendliness will never be forgotten. We are lucky to have known her. Thinking of Bob, Colleen and David. - Posted by: Dale & James (Collen’s sister-in-law) on: Apr 05, 2026

  • We have known Sue and Bob for so many years. Even though we have not been able to visit lately as we used to, we will remember with fondness their hospitality and kindness. Sue was an incredibly kind and compassionate person with her sharp wit and engaging personality. The last remembrance of Sue for us was the time spent with her sweet kindergarten class at Balmoral School. Those children loved her almost as much as she loved them. Sue will be greatly missed but always warmly and lovingly remembered . - Posted by: William and Lorraine Helgason (Friends) on: Apr 04, 2026

  • I will truly miss Sue. She was such a kind person, who I looked up to over the years at St. Paul’s. She was one of the most welcoming parishioners, when my mom and I came from St. Alban’s. I will miss talking to her about education. I will continue to treasure her wicker patio set on my balcony, which I bought at a rummage sale and always reminds me of her. I will remember one of the final memories from this last Christmas, decorating the altar and taking it down after Christmas, having coffee and shortbread with her. I am very sorry for your loss Bob, Rob, Tannis and the rest of her family. May she rest in peace. - Posted by: Aimee Proulx (Church Friend) on: Apr 04, 2026

  • What a lovely person. Sue welcomed me into St Pauls and immediately a bond happened. I was always ready to help in the kitchen or baking something for various functions. I will certainly miss her and I send my condolences to her family - Posted by: Kathy Tremblay (Church Friend) on: Apr 04, 2026
